3rd Sep'10 - "Welcome back! The
new season is upon us again and we look forward to another
exciting year throughout the club both and off the field. The
Senior
fixtures are posted on the website of course but I would like to
bring to your attention the first VP's Day for the season which will
take place on Saturday 18th September when the 1st XV play Ilkeston
at home, K.O. 3pm. The day will commence at 1:30pm with a VP's
luncheon and whilst invitation letters will be arriving on your
doorstep shortly, I wanted to give you a heads up on this now. The
cost of the luncheon is £10 per head, (we expect to provide another
complementary luncheon again later in the season) and hope to see as
many of our VP's along as possible to support the 1st in this years
campaign. We are expecting to host the NLD President on this day
too, who will be presenting the club with a prestigious award from
last season.
Please note in your forthcoming
letter we will be including a new Standing Order form for those of
you that wish to use this method for donations, but note this is for
the clubs new bank account. I look forward to seeing on the 18th,

31st Aug'10 - Derby Colts 50th
Year Celebration Event - 2010 marks the 50th year that the Derby
Colts have been in existence. Originally it was planned to hold a
Colts 50th Year Celebration and Reunion Day on the 18th September
2010 but this has now been moved to the 12th February 2011. More
details will be published over the coming months about this 12th
Feb'11 event.

There is though a still a
Colts Social Evening scheduled for the 18th Sept'10 at
7.30pm which is open to all club members, friends and
family. Why not come along and test your tasting skills at
our early season get together at Derby RFC.
The evening will start at
7.30pm with the wine, beer & cheese tasting set to begin at
8.00pm, later followed by some Sweet Soul Music. The cost is
£5.00 per person and Tickets are available from Tracy
Edmundson, Louise Pearson, Robin (DRFC Bar Manager) or any
of the Colts Coaches.

5th Aug'10 - The following Derby
Players have been selected in the Midlands U20 squad to play
Ulster academy in Belfast on Saturday 14th August - Keiran Hagan,
Joe Pass, Kane Nixon, Ed Perry, Liam Mather & Luke Willmott. Paul
McCartin will also be at the game as part of the Midlands U20s
coaching team.
Pre Season friendly - On
Saturday 14th August there is a pre season game of Lichfield v
Derby, KO 3pm.

14th July'10 - Derbyshire Cricket
Club Exclusive offer to Derby RFC - with the Derbyshire Festival
of Cricket celebrating 140 Years beginning this Thursday 15th July,
Derbyshire County Cricket Club is delighted to offer all members of
Derby Rugby Club discounted tickets to two days of the Festival.
Firstly, the Falcons take on Yorkshire Carnegie on Sunday 18th July
at 2:30pm in the climax of the Friends Provident T20 group stages,
with the game likely to determine whether or not both teams qualify
for the Quarter Finals in what is likely to be the most important
match of the season so far.

Two days later, on Tuesday 20th July,
the Falcons take on the Gloucestershire Gladiators from 4:40pm in a
floodlit Clydesdale Bank 40 match, live on Sky Sports, with plenty
of added entertainment including the RAF Falcons Parachute Display
Team, who will fly in after the toss.
DCC is happy to offer all members of

a knockout competition taking place which is being hosted by Balfour
Beatty who are raising funds for their chosen charity of the
Building Better Futures Trust which supports Action for Children,
The Prince's Trust and Coram.
Spectators are more than welcome to
come along to watch and cheer on the competitors on both days. In
addition there will be an outside bar, a BBQ, Face Painting, a mini
fun fair and a bouncy slide. |

25th June'10 - News update on our Senior side for
2010/11 - Colin Cornfield writes ... New Derby RFC head coach
for next season is Paul McCartin, with Alan Dickens moving to a
‘Director of Rugby’ role due to his increased commitments at
Northampton. Derby also welcome Dave Marshall to the coaching set
up. Dave brings a wealth of experience and technical knowledge to
the club, specifically his skills with the back division. Dave
parted company with Paviors in the summer and being able to bring
Dave to club is a great advert for Derby RFC and also an exciting
prospect for the players.
With virtually all of last season's squad retained, Derby have added
a number of new signings; Ed Hutchinson (Fly half/Centre), Chris
Meddings (Centre) both with National League experience, further
additions Kane Nixon (Full back), Russ Westcott (Wing) Ben Smith
(Wing / scrum half) Liam Mather (Second row) all have played
Midlands East 1 level, and talented youngsters, Olly James (Centre)
Olly Taylor (Hooker) will also be involved. The squad is further
strengthened by the return of Richard Sparkes from overseas and Ben
Coombes, Tom Milne, Andy Gates from injuries that kept them all out
for most of last season. Also returning will be winger Joe Teager.
Coming up from the Colts is Ed Worthington (Fly half / Full back)
with Joe Pass (Prop), who is still a Colt, also expected to feature
in the senior sides from time to time.
There will be an extra training
session on Tuesday 6th July, specifically targeted at fitness.
Normal arrangements – meet at club 6.45pm for a 7pm start.

14th June'10 - Derby Colts 50th

Roxy Fearon to reserve a place and to let Scott and Roxy know of
contact details of other past Colts then that would be appreciated.
Roxy is aiming to produce a commemorative tie for the occasion.

Derby Player Paul Archer was
recently selected for the KooGa Wailers 7s team, playing in the
National 7s Series and in Amsterdam last weekend. In Amsterdam the
KooGa Wailers were unbeaten on the first day, winning all 4 pool
games against Irish, Spanish and Dutch teams, scoring 41 tries and
conceding one (Paul scored two tries and kicked both conversions).
This meant that the KooGa Wailers were in the main cup competition
for Day 2, where they beat the Czech and Dutch national champions
easily, again only conceding 1 try.
The KooGa Wailers then moved onto the
quarter finals where they played Mel’s Exiles – an invitational team
mainly comprised of Pacific Islanders (and who had fielded Waisale
Serevi the year before) who had also yet to lose in the tournament.

The KooGa Wailers brushed Mel’s
Exiles aside 33 - 00 with Paul scoring one try and the added
conversion. The side then moved onto the semi-finals to face
Millfield Old Boys, who had beaten White Hart Marauders (featuring
Saracens wing Noah Cato) 24-5 in the other Qtr final.
In a tense semi-final the KooGa
Wailers fell behind to two early tries but battled back to score two
tries themselves to take the game into extra time. After some
end-to-end rugby, England 7s international John Brake scored in the
corner to give Millfield the extra time ‘golden score’ to take them
into the final against Samurai International.

17th May'10 - NLD and Midlands U20
updates - Last Saturday (15th May) the NLD senior side
lost out on a National Semi final going down 27-68 to a good Cumbria
side at Mansfield RFC. Whilst Cumbria were worthy winners the game
was a closer affair than the score suggests with Cumbria only taking
full control in the last quarter and running in some excellent
scores. Mikey Robertson and Tom Warren both crossed the line for NLD.
On Sunday 16th May Keiran Hagan was involved in the Midlands U20
squad to face London & South East at Cambridge University's Grange
Road Ground. The game was excellent with London & SE winning 25-26
thanks to a successful last minute penalty! Keiran along with the
other NLD lads and Coach Paul McCartin will join up with the
Midlands squad again in August for a proposed trip to Ireland to
play Ulster Academy!!!!

14th May'10 - NLD take on Cumbria
in the County Championship Pool B decider at Mansfield RFC
tomorrow (Saturday 15th May) with a 3pm KO. Included in the NLD side
are Tom Warren, Adam Parkins, Dan Sanderson, Jon Heggie, Mikey
Robertson, Elliot Spencer and Lee Miller. Phil Robinson and Greg
Bramhall who both featured in the 20-28 win over Staffordshire are
unavailable whilst Keiron Hagan who came into the squad as a late
replacement is involved in the Midlands U20 squad that play London &
SE on Sunday at Cambridge RFC.
In the curtain raiser game before the NLD game the Derbyshire
Vets take on Nottinghamshire Vets with a 12.30pm KO with Derby also
well represented, in Paul McCartin, Matt Bates, Nigel Enright, Mick
Thompson, Phil Houlton, Fergal Collins, Kevin Dove, Keiron Murphy,
Neill Collier and Felix Frixou. The last time the two sides met
Derbyshire ran out winners by 40 odd points to retain their NLD
champions crown.

13th May'10 - Forthcoming Events
at Derby RFC - Weekend of 21st to 23rd May we have the Derby RFC
Beer Festival with 15 real ales from around the country, including 4
beers from the Derby Brewing Company, P2 Imperial Stout (8%abv!!)
from the Museum brewery among others. The Event kicks off on Friday
night (21st May) with Kenoshas and support playing (£3 on the door),
with all proceeds going to support Headway Derby (a brain injury
charity).
On Saturday (22nd May) the bar will
be open from 10:00am as there is a big day of rugby league followed
by the Heineken Cup final on the big screen.
On Sunday (23rd May) the bar will be
open from noon so Dads (and Mums) can have a beer after Mini &
Junior presentations.
On both Saturday and Sunday there
will be an outside bar and BBQ (weather permitting).
Friday 28th May is Soul Night, the last one was a success and
we hope to build on this.
Derby RFC Club Opening hours over the summer will be:
Monday closed.
Tuesday will be club night with the bar open with selected beers on
offer at £1.50 a pint, and meal deals.
Wednesday bar will be open 6:00pm till 9:00pm
Thursday closed.
Friday closed or function.
Saturday and Sunday will be open for the Rugby League and Functions.

9th May'10 - Derbyshire Cup double
celebration as both Derby 1sts & 2nds beat local rivals Matlock to become the
Derbyshire Champions 2010. Today's 1st XV and 2nd XV finals were
held at Ashbourne RFC. Our 2nd XV played first and had a comfortable
35 - 07 win over Matlock 2nd XV.
The 1st XV final followed and this
was a very tight and fiercely contested game which at one point saw
Matlock in front 25 - 10. However, Derby had other ideas and in a
captivating last 20 minutes Derby piled on the pressure and
eventually came out on top with a 29 - 28 result.

6th May'10 - Derbyshire Cup Finals
take place on Sunday 9th May at Ashbourne RFC. We have both our
1st XV and 2nd XV competing in their respective Finals. At 12.00hrs
we have Derby 2nd XV v Matlock 2nd XV and at 3pm we have Derby 1st
XV v Matlock 1st XV.
Rugby League - Senior and Junior
teams - Though the Rugby Union season is coming to an end, Rugby
League is again about to start its season at Haslams. Derby City
Rugby League Football Club offers a Senior, U16s, U14s and U12s
teams with training commencing now. If you want to find out more
please visit the
Derby City Rugby League website or speak to Jane Kirk, Gary
Rudkin or Alan Williams. There are opportunities to train and play
competitive rugby at amateur and representative (East Midlands,
Midlands or even at England) level. Rugby League will be hosted at
Haslams through the summer months and will develop your core rugby
skills for either code.

5th May'10 - Newbury 10s
Tournament results held on Monday 3rd May. Derby U16s
triumph in the Newbury 10s. Following their win in the NLD Cup
Final, the boys capped a fine season with a 12-7 victory against
Harrow in the final of the cup. Along the way Derby recorded 4 wins
and a loss in the pool and a semi final win against Bristol St.

Derby U14s were also in
action in the Newbury 10s Tournament, they came top of
their Pool conceding only 1 try. They then beat Cleremont
Avergne in the Qtr Final and then they took on last years
Cup Winners Shelford in the semi final and won this game to
go into the Final against London Irish Academy where they
fought to the end but lost in a very close game 12 – 15.

4th May'10 - Staffordshire
20 - 28 Notts, Lincs & Derbyshire was last Saturday's
result. Two tries by Dan Sanderson (Derby) and further
scores by Mikey Robertson (Derby) and Dan Hooton (Matlock)
plus four conversions by Captain Ed Hutchinson (Bakewell)
gave NLD a hard fought win over Staffordshire in the opening
county championship pool 2 fixture at Longton RFC. NLD now
play Cumbria on the 15th at Mansfield RFC kick off 3pm.

2nd May'10 - Derby's U17s
are the National Bowl
2010 Champions
after their 26 - 15 win against Painswick U17s in the Final
which was held today at Franklin Gardens, Northampton Saints
RFC. Our U17s have lifted the NLD Cup. Midlands Regional
Bowl and now the National Bowl as they bring their 2009/10
season to a very successful closure.

1st May'10 - The next Quiz Night
which was due to be held on Monday 3rd May is
cancelled
as it's a Bank Holiday.
Just a reminder that the
National Bowl Final of Derby U17s v Painswick U17s will
take place at the Premiership ground of Northampton Saints
tomorrow (Sunday 2nd May) with a Kickoff of 12.45pm. A
double decker coach has been booked to take players and
supporters. Your support for our U17s would be most welcome.

are bringing this seasons exciting season to a close with a
special occasion and have lined up guest speaker Mr Brian
Moore to entertain us all. After the success of the last two
speakers dinners held at the club this season, it was clear
we needed a much bigger venue for this one, so we are
looking forward to this evening of dining, good company and
dancing, as well as some good rugby stories and banter!!"

29th Apr'10 - There is no 2nd team game
this Saturday (1st May). The 2nd team are now in the
Derbyshire 2nd team Cup Final on 9th May along with the 1st
team. There will be no training this Thursday 29th April.
For those 2nd team players who fancy a run out it may be
possible to get an appearance on the bench for the 3rds or
4ths who are playing each other in a friendly at the club
with a 2.00pm K.O. To all supporters please come along to
watch this game followed by the 1st Heineken Cup Semi at the
club in fancy dress.

(25th April) sees Derby in the NLD Cup Final against
Paviors which is being held at Mellish RFC. Kickoff is
3.30pm.

21st Apr'10 - The National
Bowl Final of Derby U17s v Painswick U17s will take
place at the Premiership ground of Northampton Saints RFC on
Sunday 2nd May'10 with a Kickoff of 12.45pm. Two coaches are
being arranged to take the Derby U17s team and Supporters.
Your support for our U17s would be most welcome. If you'd

Depending on the amount of
people on the Coach the cost will be somewhere between £5
and £10 per person. Look to be at Derby RFC for 9.30am on the

as Glossop have decided not to field a Team. This means that

Lincs & Derbyshire side that won the Midlands group of
the National Under 20 Championship have been included in the
Midlands Under 20 squad for their match against London & SE
at Cambridge University on the 16th May. Included in the
squad is Derby's Keiran Hagan. The Coaching team of the
Midlands
U20s includes Derby's Paul McCartin.
NLD Cup Final Derby v
Paviors at Mellish RFC on the 25th April'10. We've been
informed by Mellish RFC that "we do not allow dogs on
site (assistance dogs excepted)" and as such Mellish
have asked us to make Derby supporters aware of this.

Our U14s won the U14s NLD
7s Final yesterday with a 28 - 00 win over Matlock U14s
and our U17s won the Midlands Regional Bowl Final
following their
26 - 05 win over Oadby Wyggestonians in
yesterday's Final. This win takes our U17s through to the
National Bowl Semi Finals.
The next Quiz Night
which was due to be held on Monday 5th April'10 is

Cornfield writes ... Derby RFC’s strong performances
this season have resulted in opportunities to shine at a
higher level for four of their players.
It all started with Adam Parkins playing for Northampton
Saints 2nd team (the Wanderers) before Christmas and putting
in such a good performance that they signed Adam on loan
twice during the season as 1st team cover. Adam has trained
with the senior squad and played for the Wanderers regularly
since then. Later in the season, fellow prop Tom Warren also
played for the Wanderers and has also been training with the
senior squad. Two weeks ago Michael Robertson, Derby’s
leading try scorer this season who is at University at
Leeds, was asked to be in the Wanderers squad to play Leeds
2nd team and this week no. 8 Dan Sanderson appeared from the
bench for the Wanderers against Leicester Tigers 2nd team
(incidentally former Derby junior, 17 year old Rory Lynn,
also played in this game as a replacement for Leicester).
This provides real evidence that Derby RFC is a great place
for aspiring rugby players to play their rugby.

6th Mar'10 - Today's
Midlands 1 East result was Paviors 15 - 22 Derby. At the
end of the first half Paviors led by 10 points to nil,
however a spirited second half performance saw Derby run in
4 tries and a conversion which moves us into second place in
the Midlands 1 East league table following Syston's 32 - 32
draw away at Scunthorpe today.

3rd Mar'10 - Tonight at
Derby RFC there is a flood lit U17s fixture of Derby
U17s v Melbourne U17s. Kickoff is at 7.30pm.
NLD U20s are through to
the Midlands final and National quarter finals of the
Under 20s County championship. NLD put in a great
performance to beat favourites North Midlands 19-22 on
Monday night at Droitwich RFC.
Derby senior players Ed Perry, Keiron Hagan plus current
colts Joe Pass, Ed Worthington all played the full 80
minutes and made huge contributions. Joe scored the opening
try and Ed Worthington struck two conversions and a penalty
in an impressive performance at Fly Half. Colts Joe Donnelly
and Callum Schofield were also part of the match squad of
22. NLD now play East Midlands in the Midlands section final
at Broadstreet (Venue TBC) on Wednesday 10th March.
Two of our Derby U16s
players have been invited to join the Leicester Tigers
Academy. They are Harry Rudkin and James Thraves. Our

Battle of the Bands this evening (Friday 5th Feb 8pm) at
the Club. Battle of the bands features 3 groups. Each band
has a member from the Junior Colts, Danny Kevan, James
Barber and James Groom. It will take place at DRFC from 8pm

Four players from our
Derby Under 14s who were in Schools of Rugby have been
selected to train for Leicester Tigers EPDG. James Fish,
Oliver George (who both played their first game for
Leicester Tigers against Northampton Saints on Saturday 30th
January), Max Johnson and Calum Hall. These four players are
in addition to Tom Morgan (U14s) who is now in his second
year of EPDG training with the U15s. Two further players
from our U14s have progressed through to Schools of Rugby -
Matthew Chambers and Matthew Ong. Congratulations to all 6
players, Derby RFC wishes you all the very best.
England U16s Trials - two
Derby RFC players have been invited to attend the
England U16 Trials this Sunday, they are Jared Parkinson and
James Thraves. Congratulations to both players and our very
best wishes to both Jared and James in the U16s trials on
Sunday.

At the Welsh National training ground
in the Vale of Glamorgan recently, ex-derby player Tom Hicks
was selected for the final 40 of the Welsh U16 squad.
Having moved to Kent Tom has seen his share
of injuries, but has shaken them off to earn a place with
the Cardiff Blues and ultimately be considered for the
National squad.
The final phase is next weekend, and if
selected for the final squad Tom will be off to Italy for
the U16s Six Nations. |

England Viadana fan club - Against the Tigers in front of a
large crowd at Welford Road in Leicester on Saturday 16th
January there were 32 English supporters who cheered on the
Viadana Rugby team. The 'England Viadana supporters club'
were formed just over a year ago when the then Derby U15s
were on tour in Italy.

21st Jan'10 - Ex Derby
Juniors Player Jonathan Joseph has been called up to the
England Under-20 Elite Player Squad for this season's major
tournaments. Jonathan who is now 18 is part of a 32-man
group that will compete in the RBS U20 Six Nations, which
kicks off in February, and the IRB Junior World Championship
in Argentina.
Joseph, who went to Chellaston School, has previously been
part of the England Under-18 set-up. Jonathan has enjoyed a
good season so far and has featured in the LV Cup for his
club side, Guinness Premiership outfit London Irish. Read

Leesbrook player and long
serving member Paul Swannick AKA "Swanny" (playing 37
years and 5 at Nottingham) is raising money in the aid of
British Heart Foundation. On the 11th March 2010 Paul sets
off on a trek that will finish up at base camp of Everest.
He will complete a 17 day trek and cover some of the worlds
toughest terrain. Paul will climb to an altitude of 6000m.
If anyone would like to sponsor Paul they can do so via this
link. Paul is looking to raise £5k and any support no
matter how small would be greatly appreciated.

8th Jan'09 - Tomorrow's Midlands 1 East fixture of
Leighton Buzzard v Derby is
cancelled
due to the weather. All other fixtures involving Derby
Senior & Ladies sides are also cancelled due to the weather.
However, the
Club will still be open. On Saturday there is the
Leicester v Wasps game which we'll show on the Big Screen at
3pm plus we'll be showing other Rugby on DVD too. Rob will
be running food and plenty of beer with a special of Fish,
Chips and Mushy Peas for £5 and Pedigree/Carling/Olde
English Cider £2 a pint. So the message to everyone is,
please come down and enjoy the afternoon at the club and
catch up with your mates too!
On Sunday 10th Jan all
Mini & Junior games and training have also been
cancelled
as well due to the weather. It has been suggested to have a
mass snowball fight on Sunday morning at 11.00 followed by a
club social in the bar afterwards. We also have a massive
hill at Darley Park infamous for sledging.

1st XV Pitch Inspection
- The 1st team pitch was inspected at 2pm today (Friday 1st
Jan) and it was deemed just unplayable, but not far off. The
temperature was showing as 0C at the time. Another
inspection will take place at 10am on Saturday morning and
based on what sort of overnight temperatures we get Friday
night and Saturday morning against those that occurred on
Thursday night and Friday morning we will estimate the
likely conditions at 2pm on Saturday and decide whether the
game against Ilkeston is on or off.

15th Dec'09 - It is with
sadness that we mention the recent loss of John David
King 17-07-1940 to 08-12-2009.
Born Rainthi, India, John’s father served as a Vicar and
Missionary until the family returned to the UK in 1946. John
was educated at St Petes school, Exmouth until the age of 16
when he joined Rolls Royce as an engineering apprentice.
John studied Mechanical Engineering and achieved HNC
Standard before continuing to gain certification and diploma
with the Institute of Industrial Management (IMM) in 1984.
John then became a Fellowship Associate with IMM.
John worked in the Development Office at Rolls Royce and
advanced to specialise in the Combustion Department of the
Test facility.
John played Fullback for Rolls Royce RFC from 1959 – 1964
and his interest in Rugby continued when he joined Derby RFC
at Haslams as a Vice President. Despite cancer curtailing
his life and attendance this season, John will always be
remembered as a true gentleman whose presence on the ground
both home and away will be missed by many.
Our condolences go out to John's wife Jenny, daughter Sally
and grandsons Arthur and Sam.
A service of cremation will
be held at Markeaton Crematorium at 2pm on Monday 21st
December. Everyone will be welcome here and also to Derby
Rugby Club afterwards.

Did someone mention Martin
Corry was coming to Derby? Well he did, and we enjoyed
an excellent evening of food, wine and entertainment. Club
Chairman Martyn Murney writes "Upon arrival at the club,
guests were greeted to a splendid sight indeed, the tables
looked great and the food wasn't bad either. My thanks must
go to a few people who made this possible, our sponsors for
the night were David Joyce of Norwest Holst, Blackbrook
House and Crockers. I would also like to extend our
appreciation and thanks to Blackbrook House and Lavina &
Mark Lewis who kindly provided the dinner and staff for the
evening. The Raffle prizes were donated by Russell Rigby,
many thanks to you Russell for those. Martin Corry made an
enjoyable speech after dinner, some 37 odd minutes long,
pleasing one of our guests who won the guess the length of
the speech competition.

The event raised some much
needed support for the club, and I would like to thank all
those who attended and helped to make this event a success.

12th Nov'09 - This
Saturday (14th Nov) England v Argentina + other
internationals will be on the screen at Derby RFC. We do
have a large function on this weekend at the club, a wedding
party starting at approximately 4.30pm on Saturday. The club
will be open as normal for rugby, albeit we will probably
only have one game on at home. Our guests for the wedding
are more than happy with the arrangement that we will show
rugby on the screens at the near end of the club, leaving
the rest of club/bar area for their party. The club will be
open of course for all teams returning from games, so please
use the club as normal if you wish to.

7th Nov'09 - Another
result that slipped away for Derby today
as the final scoreline was Derby 08 - 11 Paviors which drops
us from 3rd to 5th in the
Midlands 1 East League table.
In the first half Derby could
have been 15 to 20 points up but instead led by just 08 - 00
at half time. Late in the second half Paviors kicked a
penalty to narrow the gap 08 - 03 and then with less than 10
minutes remaining scored a Try which took the scores level
at 08 - 08 a piece. Then with just 5 minutes to go Paviors
sent a drop kick right between the posts to give them a 3
point cushion. Could Derby get back and score that vital Try
? well they certainly tried and in the last couple of
minutes of the game Derby were given a penalty just outside
the Paviors 22 and elected to kick for touch. From the
resulting lineout Derby spun the ball from one side of the
pitch to the other and Dan Sanderson picked the ball up on
the wing, ran for the line and was hauled down just 2 yards
from the Try line. From the resulting ruck Derby were just about to spin the ball wide
when the ref adjudged that Derby had knocked on and blew for
time !

Seniors County fixture
Derbyshire 28 - 18 Nottinghamshire played on Wednesday
21st Oct at Mansfield RFC. The Derbyshire County senior side
beat their Notts rivals with a 'cameo' contribution from
Derby's own batman and robin! Callum Martin and Simon Long
and the dependable Matt Irwin.
Nottinghamshire eased ahead
18-11 with tries form Nick Dunsworth (Southwell) and Dan
Manners (Ollerton) but both Martin and Long came off the
bench to have a massive influential on the outcome. Martin
showed the Derbyshire forwards the way with some charging
runs and big hits but Long not to be outdone crucially
charged over for two tries typical 'simmo' touchdowns. The
Derbyshire forwards dominated the second period creating the
platform to allow Amber Valley centre Shaun Dowdall to power
over from 25m to add to a first half effort from impressive
full back Tom Oldfield (Bakewell), Will Moroney (Bakewell)
adding two penalties and a conversion.

28th Oct'09 - Martyn
Murney (Derby RFC Club Chairman) has put together a
briefing outlining how the Club is moving forward in respect
to the loss of Concept XV.
Following the announcement
that Concept XV was to cease trading at Derby RFC, the club
has now taken on the responsibility for looking after it’s
own needs in the bar and catering areas. Right now we are
running this with volunteers only, and this needs as much
help as possible to achieve. Those of you that were at the
club last weekend will have seen this in action, and I am
pleased to say it worked very well, my thanks to everyone
that volunteered and made it successful.
We still need volunteers to step forward to help run this
club in all kinds of ways, not just bar and catering. On
training and match days, glass collecting and keeping the
place clean and tidy all helps, so please shout up if you
can lend a hand, but don’t feel you need to be asked first!
We also need someone to run the Gate on 1st team match days
to sell programmes, this will ease the pressure on Committee
members who already have other duties to perform on those
days. If you can help please contact Graham Darby, Club
Volunteer Coordinator (CVC) on 07793 315595 or by email (see
the Contacts page for
Graham's email address).
Opening times: (For this week and next)
Week Days – Training nights Monday to Thursday 5.30 till
9.30
Fridays – Closed unless any games or functions are planned.
Saturday open as normal for matches, the bar will close at
10.00pm approx.
Sunday open from 8.30am until finish, usually 3.00pm. Tea
and coffee + bacon cobs etc will be available. The bar will
be open from 12pm to 3pm.
Food - Players meals after training Tuesdays and Thursday
will be available, + players’ meals at weekends. (If Juniors
want similar facility, this can be arranged again I’m sure.)
Food service at other times, we are planning this out at the
moment and hope to start this up again at weekends, more on
this to follow shortly.
Quiz Night, first Monday in the month, the next one is on
November 2nd, food served from 6.00pm, get a team together
and come down.
Finally, we are finalising discussions regarding the future
arrangements for running the bar facility, more information
will be posted on the website as soon as this is available.
A full update should be available in my next newsletter;
this will be out by the end of this week, so look out for
this on the website and in the club.
Your support for the club is extremely valuable at this time
of change, so please do whatever you can to help, and use
the club as often as you can and let’s continue to make this
club something we are all proud to be part of. Come on

CONFERENCE GRAND FINALS
The culmination of Co-operative Rugby League Conference
XII could not have more contrasting finals to end another
season of action stretching the length and breadth of three
countries.
From Lossiemouth to Carluke in Scotland, Whitley Bay to
Plymouth in England and Rhyl to West Wales in the
Principality, more teams have played more matches then ever
before during the summer of 2009.
This Sunday, 13th September at Haslams, the home of Derby
RFC, the respective Champions will be decided and organisers
are anticipating that, like last season at the same venue, a
four-figure gate will be in attendance.
Two experienced campaigners contest the Harry Jepson Trophy
(kick off 4.30), with West London Sharks looking to avenge
last year’s Grand Final loss to Nottingham Outlaws and a
2004 reverse against Widnes Saints. Sharks have hit form at
just the right time, beating South London Storm in the
Southern Premier Grand Final, after their rivals had gone
through the regular season unbeaten. They face Coventry
Bears, winners in 2002 when they defeated Hemel Stags,
although they lost out to St Albans Centurions in 2007, who
have had a terrific run of form late season.
If the two sides in the Premier decider have trodden this
path before, the teams facing each other for the Regional
Grand Final (kick off 1.30) are in unchartered waters.
Jarrow Vikings defeated Scottish Champions Edinburgh Eagles
in the semi final and have lost only once all season. They
come up against unbeaten East Division winners Northampton
Casuals who, in only their second season in the RLC, were
hugely impressive in seeing off Hunslet-based Parkside Hawks
in the quarter final and then blitzing Devon Sharks in their
semi.
In between those two clashes, Coventry Bears and Bradford
Thunderbirds will contest the RLC Women’s Premier Grand
Final (kick off 3pm).
Admission is free and car parking is £2 per car, including a
match day programme.

Sports & Businessman's Dinner takes place on the 16th
November 2009 with Guest Speaker Martin Corry.
Since making his Tigers debut in August 1997,
Martin has won five Premiership titles, a Premiership
Championship, two Heineken European Cups and an Anglo-Welsh
Cup after earlier spells with Bristol and Newcastle
Gosforth.
Martin Corry has won 64 caps for England, including being a
member of the World Cup-winning squad in 2003, Runner-up in
2007 World Cup and has toured Australia and New Zealand with
the British and Irish Lions.
Tickets for the Sports &
Businessman's Dinner are £29.50 per
person and this includes a 3 course dinner. Places are

2nd Sep'09 - The 'new look' Derby RFC website is now online
and ready for the 2009/10 season. I hope that you
like it. I will be continuing to 'develop' the site over the
coming weeks so you'll likely see further additions /
amendments. A request, if
anyone has any photographs from 1900 to the 1980's that they
think would be suitable for inclusion into the Club History
page could I ask you to scan them and email them to me
please - Thanks Brian.
This Saturday
5th September sees the opening game of the season as
Derby takeon Wellingborough. Kickoff is 3pm. It's also VP's
Day on Saturday too, contact Jane Kirk to reserve your place
!

Club Members Notice - Since the recent activities
involving our traveller visitors, we have installed height
restriction bars on the main gate to the club. Please be
aware of this if you have a vehicle higher than a 4 x 4.
Would all coach's please be aware of the important security
risks we face at the moment and in the future, so make sure
everything is locked up and gates shut after training and

evening at the Club starting at 9pm.

Club Chairman Martyn Murney writes.....
John Bentley
added a touch of old style rugby after dinner speaking, to
what was without doubt a very enjoyable evening at the club
on Friday 14th August. The dinner was the sponsored by
Russell Rigby (Rigby & Co) and Nick Alexander (Roxdan
Developments) as a business focused event to kick start a
new style of social function in the club, and one of what we
hope will be a number hosted this coming season. The night
was a sell out and included many new faces enjoying the
clubs facilities for the first time, and of course a few of
our regular supporters, all of whom I would like to thank
again for the attending the evening. |

The evening did of course help raise funds for the club, at
a time when new ways of seeking funds and support is very
important to the future of our club. None of this would have
happened without the tremendous hard work undertaken by Jane
Kirk, our Events Coordinator and Social Chair, big thanks to
you Jane (also known as "Kirkos" now!) .
I would like to extend my personal thanks again to Russell
and Nick for their support on this occasion, and getting new
business people into the club and generating new levels of
interest in this way. So, if you missed this one, keep your
eyes peeled for the next dinner, now being planned for
November, and speak to Jane for more information. Regards,

18th Aug'09 - Our first VP's Day
will take place on Saturday 5th September
with the
opening game of the season against Wellingborough, kick off
3:00pm and is sure to be keen start to this years campaign
in the Midlands 1 East League. Our usual fayre will be
provided for all VP's and guests, tickets are priced at £10.

the slip that will accompany our Presidents welcoming letter

15th Aug'09 - Derby v South Leicester pre season warm up
game takes place today with a 3pm kickoff here at Derby
RFC. Result update: Derby 17 - 15 South Leicester.
Derby RFC Bring a Gardening
Implement Party 2009 on Sunday 23rd August. With the new
season just 3 weeks away, Graham Darby is organising our
annual pre-season Club tidy up. The intention will be to
meet at the Club around 10am and people will form up into
teams and undertake a specific task. This could be anything
from strimming the weeds to painting the fence so come
prepared to get grubby !
If you have a petrol mower, a
garden rake or any piece of equipment that may come in
handy, please bring it along.
If enough folks come along we can get the tasks finished
nice and quickly and then enjoy a free BBQ and a drink. If
you have any questions regarding this event please contact

16th July'09 - Derby RFC Sports & Businessman's Dinner
takes place on Friday 14th August'09 with Guest Speaker John
Bentley. Places are £29.50 each which will include a 3
course dinner.
John Bentley was born on 5 Sept
1966 and has represented at both rugby league and rugby
union. Aged just 21 in 1988 he played his first
International for England against Ireland and played on the
summer tour against Australia.

He then turned his back on union
which was then an amateur-only game, and played professional
rugby league. He played for Great Britain at league.
When Union turned professional in 1996 John signed to
Newcastle Falcons. He was then selected on the 1997 Lions
tour, where he played in the second test.
After the tour he played 2 more
times for England at union before returning to league. John
currently plays for Cleckheaton RFC and is involved with
Leeds Tykes community rugby programme and match day
entertainment. |

8th July'09 - Our Derby Vipers Ladies Rugby Team is holding a Meet, Greet &
Taster session on Friday 10th July for any lady who
wishes to try out rugby as a novice or any experienced
player's who want to get back into the game. We are a
development side and we welcome anyone who has interest in
getting involved on or off the pitch.

The evening will begin with a warm welcome in the club house
at 7pm before moving down to the pitch for a bit of fun,
don't worry it won't be contact just lots and lots of fun.
All you will need is some trainer's, jogging bottom's or
shorts and a bit of enthusiasm and we will teach you the
rest.

British & Irish Lions v South Africa Test Match this
Saturday, 4th July! Don't forget to let Liffy know if
you want a table for lunch this weekend, the last 2 Tests
have been very busy at Haslams and this weekend will be no
exception we expect. Come and watch the Lions take on the
Boks for the final tour match, and let's hope we take the
game this time!
