14th Mar'10: Derby v Nuneaton Match Report

We were happy to welcome Nuneaton to Haslams this week. As usual we were able to field to good squads. The Derby side laid the foundation for an excellent set of games. There were a few changes in personnel from the NLD tournament but it all worked in our favour. Basics have improved and this led to good penetrating rugby with at least 3 tries going unanswered and victory in the first game secured.

The Saxons then continued the good start. Showing what has now become part of their way of playing, providing good support for each other. The game was in balance all the way through but a try to take us 3-2 ahead and some solid defence in the final minute gave us the second victory of the day.

Well done all.

Thanks to Nuneaton for coming and we look forward to the Hinckley Festival next week

24th Jan'10: Derby v Newark Match Report

After too many weeks of inactivity it was great to get opportunity blow the Christmas New Year & Snow cob webs out. An excellent turn out of 36 boys.

Game 1 Derby

The first game started with all Derby pressure, going close on both wings but unable to turn the pressure into points.

The second half saw Derby still performing well but some lapses in concentration allowed Newark to go 2 tries ahead. But the heads didn’t drop and Derby re-established their grip on the game. It was still difficult to create space as Newark were very quick up on the Derby attacks! But with determination quick thinking and some tactical kicking the Newark defence was broken and the two tries were pulled back and the game ended two tries a piece.

Game 2 Saxons

The second game saw Derby Saxons take to the pitch eager to make their mark and that’s exactly what they did. The first try coming in the first half from driving open play and good following up.

In the second half the Saxons went further ahead from a line-out which Derby lost but a charge down of the Newark clearance and quick reactions resulted in a Derby touch-down. Newark responded and with some changes of personnel turned the game around and mange to sneak the win 3 tries to 2. But this does not detract from the skill determination and commitment shown by all the players.

Overall an excellent performance by all the squad and we look forward to taking the lessons into the next game.

25th Oct'09: Derby v Silhillians Match Report

It was a pleasure for Derby Under 12s to welcome the Silhhilans RFC to Haslams in a quickly arranged fixture. "The Sills" made contact after their game had been subject to late cancellation.

"The Sills" last played Derby back in April at the end of last season when Derby won the Sutton Coldfield tournament. The Sills had lost to Derby in a hard fought contest but appreciated the way Derby played rugby and it is real testament to all the players that the reputation gained on that Finals day encourages teams from far a field to want to play against us.

The first games today saw the Tigers concede an early try but this galvanised the Tigers and some excellent rugby saw the Tigers run out out 21 -7 winners. Hugo Lynn excelled at scrum half and Josh McDonald had his best game so far on the wing.

The second game saw Derby take on the best of the Sills could offer and a close fought contest saw Derby run out eventual winners 21-0 in a real strong team performance.

Tom Ward displayed some strong running which "the Sills" found difficult to cope with and the pack scrummaged exceptionally well.

Special mention to Jacob Orme, Lewis Fearon and Jonny Doyle for playing in both games due to shortage of forwards.

Very pleasing performances from the whole of the squad.
