28th Jan'12: Syston 08 - 31 Derby Colts

DEPLETED DERBY COLTS KEEP ON WINNING

Derby Colts returned to league action after two weeks of cancelled fixtures to win 31-8. The coaches were missing several key players due to representative commitments, resulting in a patched up back line. Syston took early advantage with an early try. Derby responded as Laurence Powell finished off a fine Ben Edmundson run. From then onwards Derby controlled most of the half. Debutant Tom Hutchinson finished off a left wing overlap for a 10-5 Derby lead. Syston stayed in touch with a penalty. This stung Derby into reasserting themselves with the best move of the game. Forwards and backs combined to run the length of the field for Ed Wesson to finish. The intensity of the move reached the levels Derby had shown prior to the enforced break. Lewis Hancock converted for a Derby lead, 17-8 at half time. The second half was more disjointed with multiple penalties preventing flowing rugby. Despite this Powell added a second try following an excellent Tom Antrobus run, again well converted. Aaron Finnegan was unfortunate to have a try disallowed before Jamie Smith scored a final converted try. Josh McCallion was named MOM after successfully filling in as an emergency fly-half.

28th Jan'12: Derby Colts 64 - 05 Syston (Qtr Final Leicestershire Cup)

Confident Derby were just too good for Syston. Syston arrived with 14 men and Derby took full advantage. The confidence and intensity of recent weeks was maintained as Derby won 64-5. Derby dominance began with a Callan Watson try under the posts quickly followed by an Aaron Finnegan try in the corner. Both expertly converted by George Castleton. Jack Coombs then charged down an attempted clearance and fell on the ball to score. Syston were breached again this time Sam Martin finished off a flowing move. Two further tries for Derby before half time emphasised their dominance. Jake Barker scored the first and his backrow partner Jake Thompson got the other both from close range. Castlediner converting one to give Derby a 38-0 half time lead. The second half started well for Syston with a forwards try. Derby responded with a converted Ben Edmundson try. Lewis Hancock added to the scoring following a powerful Luke Frixou run. Coombs then held off tacklers to score his second try. Frixou completed the try scoring. Both tries were converted by Castlelime. Derby's Barker then took a heavy blow to the face that required sufficient medical attention to persuade the referee to call time. Coombs was named man of the match but once again this was an excellent team effort.

21st Jan'12: Nuneaton 00 - 27 Derby Colts (National Plate)

COLTS SHUT OUT NUNS TO WIN THROUGH

Derby Colts beat Nuneaton 27-0 to progress in the national plate. Derby started quickly in this potentially difficult away fixture. Lewis Hancock scored following good hands in Derby's first move. This was soon followed by a forward drive that resulted in a Sam Neal finish. Both tries were converted by George Castledome. The second conversion was of note as the ball had been blown off its tee requiring Castledime to drop goal the conversion. Nuneaton pressure was resisted and the excellent Castledrain enhanced Derby dominance by using the wind advantage to slot a penalty from half way. The half finished with Hancock scoring his second try taking advantage of Nuneaton disarray following a forwards scuffle. 22-0 at half time left Derby facing the challenge of a stiff breeze, unsurprisingly Derby spent most of the half defending their line. Brave well organised defence repelled Nuneaton's efforts and Ed Wesson broke free to run the length of the field to score the only points of the half. 27-0 was particularly satisfying for the coaching team as Derby kept their cool in a sometimes bad tempered game which included 10 minutes with 14 men. All Derby players played well but Castlemain won a deserved man of the match for his excellent game management.
